Question 1

How do I get from Montreux to Gruyères and what is the best way to reach the Gruyères Castle?

Accepted Answer

Take the train from Montreux to Bulle (25 mins), then transfer to the Molinis-Gruyères funicular (7 mins). The funicular drops you near Gruyères Castle - it's a 5-minute walk uphill. The Swiss Travel Pass covers both train and funicular. Castle entry is CHF 12, open daily 10:00-17:00; last entry one hour before closing.

Question 2

Is Gruyères worth visiting in the rain, and what indoor activities are available?

Accepted Answer

Yes - Gruyères remains accessible in rain. The town has covered walkways, and key indoor sites include Gruyères Castle and the HR Giger Museum, reachable via covered path from the funicular. The Musée du Fromage Gruyère in nearby Pringy (10-min drive) offers guided cheese-making tours. Umbrellas and waterproof footwear are advised during frequent drizzle.

Question 3

Can I buy authentic Gruyère cheese directly in Gruyères, and which producers are trustworthy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, buy directly at Maison du Gruyère in Gruyères village or at Fromagerie Gretsch-Fromage (Place de la Poste). Both source from local AOC-certified dairies. Look for the "Moulin" label and production within Fribourg canton. Vacuum-sealed wheels (500g-5kg) are travel-friendly. Avoid tourist shops selling pre-packaged cheese from outside the region.

Question 4

What is the best time of year to visit Gruyères for mild weather and fewer crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit between mid-May and late June or September to early October. Temperatures range 12-20°C, ideal for walking. Summer (July-August) brings crowds and occasional rain. Spring and autumn offer wildflowers and fall foliage, respectively. Winter (Dec-Mar) is quiet but some museums reduce hours; check ahead.
