Question 1

Which airport is closest to Great Otway National Park for flying in?

Accepted Answer

Avalon Airport near Geelong is the closest major hub, located about 90 minutes east of the park entrance. For direct access to coastal towns like Apollo Bay, consider flying into Melbourne Airport and driving the scenic Great Ocean Road route, which takes roughly two and a half hours. Regional flights to nearby airstrips are limited and often seasonal.

Question 2

What is the best time to visit Great Otway National Park to avoid heavy rain?

Accepted Answer

Visit between December and March for the driest conditions and warmest temperatures, ideal for hiking the rainforest tracks. Winter months from June to August bring significant rainfall and cooler weather, which can make trails slippery. While the park is lush year-round, spring offers blooming wildflowers with moderate shower risks.

Question 3

Do I need a specific pass to enter Great Otway National Park?

Accepted Answer

No entry fee or specific park pass is required for general day visits to Great Otway National Park. However, if you plan to camp overnight at designated campgrounds like Blanket Bay or Johanna Beach, you must book and pay for a campsite in advance through the official Victoria Parks website.

Question 4

Are there shuttle services available within Great Otway National Park?

Accepted Answer

No regular public shuttle buses operate inside the park boundaries. Visitors must rely on private vehicles or join organized tour groups departing from Melbourne or Geelong to reach key sites like the Otway Fly Treetop Walk. Taxi services are scarce in remote areas, so self-driving remains the most practical transport option.
