Perched in the heart of Ghent, Gravensteen Castle rises like a medieval sentinel along the serene Lys River, its stone ramparts echoing centuries of Flemish history. Built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, this remarkably preserved fortress blends Romanesque and Gothic architecture with a moat, drawbridge, and imposing keep that invites exploration. Wander through its austere chambers and climb its towers for panoramic views over Ghent’s skyline - where Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and the belfry stand nearby. Once a seat of power and later a cotton mill, the castle now offers immersive exhibits on medieval life, making it a compelling stop amid the city’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
