Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit the Grand Canal in Venice?

Accepted Answer

Visit the Grand Canal in Venice between April and June or September to November. These months offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and lower chances of acqua alta flooding. July and August bring peak tourist numbers and heat, while winter months, especially November, carry higher flood risk due to seasonal high tides.

Question 2

How do I travel along the Grand Canal without paying for a private water taxi?

Accepted Answer

Use Line 1 of the ACTV vaporetto (water bus), which travels the full length of the Grand Canal, stopping at major landmarks. A single ticket costs €9.50 and is valid for 75 minutes. For longer stays, consider the 24-, 48-, or 72-hour tourist passes for unlimited rides.

Question 3

Are there any guided tours that include both the Grand Canal and historic palaces?

Accepted Answer

Yes, take a guided boat tour with included entry to landmarks like Doge's Palace and Ca' d’Oro. Companies like Venice Tourist Card and Walks of Italy offer small-group tours featuring skip-the-line access and live commentary on Gothic architecture and Venetian history.

Question 4

Can I rent a rowboat on the Grand Canal, and is it allowed for tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes, tourists can rent traditional rowing boats (called sandoli) at designated docks near Santa Maria della Salute or San Tomà. Rowing is permitted on the Grand Canal, but experience is recommended due to heavy vaporetto traffic. Rentals cost approximately €25–€35 per hour.
