Highway 1 & Yosemite Adventure · 3-Day San Francisco + 17-Mile Drive from Los Angeles

When I compared similar routes, a three-day Bay Area and Yosemite combination was one of the reasons I chose this version, and it did not feel like an unnecessary extra once we were traveling. I was worried group travel would mean a lot of wasted waiting time, but the days around Yosemite National Park and 17-Mile Drive moved along with fairly clear meeting points. Yosemite National Park was busier than some of the other stops, while 17-Mile Drive gave the day a different rhythm and kept the trip from feeling like one long photo line. I expected Yosemite National Park to be the highlight, but 17-Mile Drive ended up being the place I kept talking about after the trip because the two stops felt completely different.

One of the stronger details was Los Angeles round trip; it gave this version of the tour a clearer identity than a bare-bones list of attractions. If I return to California, I would probably stay near Carmel for several days, but for a first visit I was glad to also see Stanford and Fisherman’s Wharf. Before leaving I barely noticed Los Angeles round trip in the description, but in practice it was much more noticeable than it looked online.

For pure scenery I would rank Barstow Outlets first, but Grand Canyon West Rim had the better atmosphere and was the place where I wanted a little more time. The itinerary is not built around one flashy selling point; a broad first-time overview of the West together with stops like Barstow Outlets and Grand Canyon West Rim made it feel like a well-rounded route.
