Question 1

What is the best month to visit Essaouira?

Accepted Answer

The best time to visit Essaouira is between September and November. During these months, the summer crowds have thinned, hotel rates drop, and the weather remains pleasant with average highs of 24°C (75°F). Unlike the windy June to August period, the breeze is milder, making it ideal for beach walks and exploring the medina.

Question 2

How do I get from Marrakech to Essaouira, and is the road safe?

Accepted Answer

Take the T90 highway from Marrakech to Essaouira – a 2.5 to 3-hour drive (170 km) on a well-maintained, modern road. The route is safe and clearly signposted. Buses like Supratours and CTM operate frequent daily services. For flexibility and comfort, consider a private transfer, especially with luggage.

Question 3

Is Essaouira Medina worth visiting, and can I explore it in one day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Essaouira Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and worth exploring. Its ramparts, blue doors, and artisan workshops offer an authentic vibe. You can comfortably tour the main sights – Skala de la Ville, Place Moulay Hassan, souks, and the port – in one full day. Arrive early to avoid midday heat and combine with a sunset at the ramparts.

Question 4

Do I need cash in Essaouira, or are cards widely accepted?

Accepted Answer

Carry Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) in cash for small vendors, souks, taxis, and cafés – many don’t accept cards. ATMs in the medina and near the port dispense local currency. Larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in the Ville Nouvelle may accept cards, but cash remains essential for daily transactions and bargaining in markets.
