Question 1

Is the James Dalton Highway paved, and what should I expect when driving it?

Accepted Answer

No, the James Dalton Highway is mostly gravel and dirt, with some paved sections near Fairbanks and Deadhorse. Drive at 25-35 mph due to washboards, potholes, and gravel. High-clearance vehicles are recommended. Fuel and services are extremely limited - refill in Fairbanks, Coldfoot, or at the Toolik Field Station.

Question 2

Can I drive the James Dalton Highway in winter, and is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only for experienced drivers with winter gear and emergency supplies. The highway stays open year-round, but temperatures drop below -40°F. Snow and ice create hazardous conditions. Cellular coverage is nonexistent. Carry extra fuel, food, warm clothing, and a satellite communication device.

Question 3

Do I need a permit to travel the James Dalton Highway to Deadhorse?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you need a permit to access the restricted area beyond the gate at Mile 152, including Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay. Tour operators typically arrange this. If driving independently, coordinate with the operator of the facility you’re visiting – permits are not issued to casual tourists.

Question 4

When is the best time of year to drive the James Dalton Highway?

Accepted Answer

The best time is June through August when weather is milder, temperatures range from 40–70°F, and the road is passable. This avoids winter’s extreme cold and limited daylight. Note: Midnight sun occurs from mid-May to late July, offering 24-hour daylight for travel.
