Question 1

How do I get from Oviedo to Covadonga, and what’s the best way to reach the lakes?

Accepted Answer

Take a bus from Oviedo’s Estación de Autobuses to Cangas de Onís (1.5 hours), then transfer to a local bus or guided tour to Covadonga. From the Basilica, hike 5 km uphill or rent a bike to reach Lakes Enol and Ercina - private shuttles also run in summer (June-Sept).

Question 2

What is the best time of year to visit Covadonga’s mountain lakes?

Accepted Answer

The best time is July to mid-September when snow has melted, trails are clear, and shuttle buses operate to Lakes Enol and Ercina. Expect cool temperatures even in summer. Avoid October-May due to road closures, ice, and limited access.

Question 3

Are there entry fees or permits needed to hike in Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa near Covadonga?

Accepted Answer

No entry fees or permits are required to hike in Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa. The park is free and open year-round, though voluntary visitor centers in Covadonga and Cangas de Onís provide maps and safety advice.

Question 4

Is there reliable public transportation to Covadonga from major Spanish cities?

Accepted Answer

Direct public transport is limited. Take a train or bus to Oviedo, then a ALSA bus to Cangas de Onís. From there, use the seasonal Tucovadonga shuttle (summer only) or a taxi to reach Covadonga’s sanctuary and trailheads. Renting a car offers most flexibility.
