The town was officially name Canmore in 1884 by Canadian Pacific Railway director Donald A. Smith. The town is known for its coal mining history; the first coal mining charter was granted by Queen Victoria in 1886. There are restrictions for future rural development due to its climate and geographic location. The town is home to many resorts and attracts many to join snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding.

The distance is very short, with Canmore located just 25 kilometers from Banff Town, about a 15-20 minute drive. As a result, Canmore is a highly popular travel hub.

Like Banff, summer from June to August is Canmore's warmest season, with average temperatures around 68°F (20°C). This season marks the peak for outdoor activities and sightseeing, making it the best time to visit. Winter from December to February brings heavy snowfall, with temperatures dropping as low as 14°F (-10°C), creating ideal conditions for winter sports.

Spring and fall are the off-peak seasons for visiting the Rocky Mountains, though temperatures still range between 41–59°F (5–15°C). However, some attractions and roads may still be closed.
