Question 1

Which airport should I fly into for visiting Angkor Wat in Siem Reap?

Accepted Answer

Fly directly into Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI), which replaced the old airport in late 2023. It is located about 45 minutes from the main temple complex. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are readily available outside the terminal. Avoid landing in Phnom Penh if your primary goal is Angkor Wat, as it requires an extra domestic flight or a five-hour bus ride.

Question 2

What is the best time to visit Cambodia to avoid heavy rain and extreme heat?

Accepted Answer

Visit between November and February for cool, dry weather ideal for temple exploration. The monsoon season runs from May to October, bringing daily downpours that can flood roads and make rural travel difficult. March and April are the hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C. If you visit during the wet season, expect lush greenery but plan indoor activities for afternoons.

Question 3

Do I need a special pass to enter the Angkor Archaeological Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all visitors must purchase an Angkor Pass at the official ticket center near the park entrance. Passes are valid for one, three, or seven consecutive days and require a digital photo taken on-site. Costs are approximately $37, $62, and $72 respectively. Keep your pass with you at all times, as guards check them at major temples. Buying online in advance is not currently an option for first-time entry.

Question 4

What currency should I use for daily expenses in Cambodia?

Accepted Answer

Cambodia operates on a dual-currency system using both the US Dollar and the Cambodian Riel. Small transactions under $1 are usually paid in Riel, while hotels and tours accept dollars. Ensure your dollar bills are crisp and undamaged, as torn notes are often rejected. ATMs dispense US dollars, but you will receive change in Riel. Credit cards work in major cities but carry a surcharge.
