Question 1

How do I get from Bilbao Airport (BIO) to the city center using public transit?

Accepted Answer

Take the Aeroplan bus from outside Terminal 1 - it runs every 15 minutes from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM, arriving at Plaza Circular in 15 minutes. A one-way ticket costs €1.05 (as of 2024). Alternatively, Line 3 of the metro connects nearby Casco Viejo station via a short transfer at Ansio.

Question 2

Is the Bilbao City Pass worth it for first-time visitors?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if visiting multiple attractions. The Bilbao City Pass includes free entry to the Guggenheim Museum, free public transit (metro, buses, funiculars), and discounts at 15+ sites. A 72-hour pass costs €34 and pays for itself with just two major visits plus transit savings. Ideal for 2–3 days of touring.

Question 3

What's the best time of year to visit Bilbao for mild weather and fewer crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit between May and June or September to October. These months offer mild temperatures (15-22°C), minimal rainfall compared to the wetter winter and spring peak, and fewer tourists than in July-August. Bilbao’s maritime climate means rain can occur year-round - pack a light rain jacket.

Question 4

Can I use euros at museums and restaurants in the Abando and Casco Viejo districts?

Accepted Answer

Yes, euros (€) are the official currency in Bilbao. All museums, restaurants in Abando, Casco Viejo, and across the city accept cash and card. Some pintxo bars in Casco Viejo may have a small discount for cash payments. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some euros for small purchases.
