Question 1

What is the best time to visit Badain Jaran Desert to avoid extreme heat?

Accepted Answer

Visit between May and June or September and October for mild temperatures. Summer months often exceed 40°C, making hiking dangerous. Winter nights drop below freezing, so pack layered clothing. Spring offers clear skies but brings occasional sandstorms, so check local weather forecasts before finalizing your travel dates.

Question 2

How do travelers reach the high sand dunes and lakes in Badain Jaran Desert?

Accepted Answer

Most visitors enter via Yabulai Town in Alxa Right Banner. From there, hire a local off-road vehicle with an experienced driver to navigate the soft sand. Public transport does not reach the deep desert core. Ensure your driver knows the route to specific lakes like Sumu Jilin, as GPS signals can be unreliable in this remote region.

Question 3

Is cash or mobile payment more reliable for services in Badain Jaran Desert?

Accepted Answer

Carry sufficient Chinese Yuan cash, as mobile payments like WeChat Pay often fail due to poor network coverage in the desert. Small guesthouses and local drivers may not accept digital wallets. Withdraw money in larger cities like Yinchuan or Alxa Left Banner before heading into the remote dune areas to avoid being stranded without funds.

Question 4

Can tourists swim in the lakes surrounded by sand dunes in Badain Jaran?

Accepted Answer

Swimming is generally prohibited or strongly discouraged in most lakes due to high salinity and sacred local status. While some lakes appear inviting, the water quality varies, and infrastructure for swimming is nonexistent. Focus on photography and hiking the surrounding dunes instead. Always respect signage and instructions from local guides regarding water access.
