10-Day Southern National Parks Tour from Christchurch: Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Franz Josef | Flexible Independent Travel

Southern National Parks

We had a great trip, but the amount of rain was a little disappointing, most of our National parks days were rained out. We wanted to avoid the crowds of summer, which we definitely did, but thinking now fall may have been a better time to visit! Though we did have two perfect weather days in Milford, which we were told was pretty unusual. Everything went so smoothly, all the shuttles were great. Our shuttle driver from Queenstown to Franz Josef, was particularly good. They saw we liked taking photos and knew all the scenic places to stop so we could pop out and photograph. The app was super easy and convenient, and the help when we made itinerary adjustments due to weather was appreciated.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de Arthurs Pass National Park

What is the best time to visit Arthur's Pass National Park for hiking?

Visit between December and March for the most stable weather and open trails. Summer offers long daylight hours, ideal for crossing the Southern Alps. Avoid winter unless you are an experienced alpine climber, as heavy snow closes many paths and avalanches are a genuine risk. Always check the Department of Conservation alerts before departure.

Which airport is closest to Arthur's Pass National Park?

Christchurch Airport is the primary gateway, located approximately two hours by car via State Highway 73. This scenic drive crosses the Canterbury Plains directly into the mountains. While smaller airfields exist nearby, they do not offer commercial flights. Renting a vehicle in Christchurch is essential, as no public bus service enters the park core.

Are there any local passes required to enter Arthur's Pass National Park?

No entry pass or fee is required to visit Arthur's Pass National Park itself. Access to trails, viewpoints, and campgrounds like Bealey Flat is free. However, you must pay for specific activities like hut stays on multi-day Great Walks or booking a campsite in advance during peak summer season. Carry cash, as card facilities are limited within the village.

How should travelers prepare for sudden weather changes in Arthur's Pass?

The alpine environment here is notoriously volatile, with conditions shifting from sun to snow within minutes. Pack waterproof layers, warm fleece, and sturdy boots regardless of the season. Never rely on a single forecast; check the MetService mountain forecast specifically for the Southern Alps before every hike. If visibility drops or winds rise, turn back immediately to ensure safety.
