See the historic south of France city that captivated Van Gogh and where he painted his iconic Cafe Terrace at Night, which is still there today and now known as Cafe Van Gogh. Arles is also known for its illustrious Roman past and its remarkably intact Roman amphitheater, Les Arènes, which was once the scene of gladiator combat and is now home to bullfighting and concerts. Visitors should also hit the Van Gogh trail, a walking tour of the city marked by plaques which takes in spots where Van Gogh set up his easel to paint canvases such as Starry Night over the Rhône.

La mejor época para visitar Arles

Otoño2026/2027
As the summer intensity wanes, Arles enters a mellow, golden "Indian Summer." September remains warm, but by October, the air cools to a comfortable 17°C to 23°C (63°F to 73°F). The light softens into a rich, honeyed glow that drapes over the Rhône River. This is the harvest season for the region’s famous olives and rice, and the local markets overflow with mushrooms, game, and the last of the sun-ripened tomatoes. The crowds of the photography festival disperse, returning the city to a more intimate, provincial pace. It is an exceptional time for birdwatching in the wetlands or cycling through the Alpilles hills, as the mosquitoes of the Camargue begin to vanish.

Invierno2026/2027
Winter in Arles is quiet, stark, and deeply traditional. While the Mediterranean sun often shines, the temperature drops to between 3°C and 12°C (37°F to 54°F), and the mistral wind can feel razor-sharp against the skin. The city focuses on its Santon (traditional figurine) markets and the "Thirteen Desserts" of a Provençal Christmas. This is the best time for those seeking a "slow travel" experience; you can have the Musee de l'Arles Antique almost to yourself. The landscape of the Camargue takes on a haunting, ethereal beauty in the winter mist, with bulls and horses standing out against the silver marshes. Many smaller boutiques and seasonal restaurants may close for a few weeks, but the core of the city remains stubbornly authentic.

Spring in Arles is a sensory awakening, as the mistral wind scours the sky to a brilliant, "Van Gogh" blue. Temperatures are sublime, typically resting between 15°C and 22°C (59°F to 72°F), though the wind can add a sudden chill. This is the season of the Feria d'Arles in April, where the Roman Amphitheatre roars back to life with traditional festivals and bullfights. The surrounding plains of the Crau burst into wildflower blooms, and the cafes along the Boulevard des Lices begin to buzz with locals sipping pastis in the afternoon sun. It is an ideal time for walking tours of the UNESCO ruins without the sweltering heat of summer.

Verano2027
Summer is the most iconic season in Arles, characterized by intense heat and a global celebration of art. Temperatures frequently soar between 28°C and 35°C (82°F to 95°F), and the rhythmic drone of cicadas becomes the city’s soundtrack. This period hosts the prestigious Rencontres d'Arles, a world-renowned photography festival that turns every chapel and granary into a gallery. The sun sets late, allowing for long dinners in hidden courtyards scented with jasmine and lavender. In the nearby Camargue, the flamingos gather in the lagoons, and the white horses graze under a relentless sun. While the atmosphere is electric and the light is at its most dramatic, the heat can be oppressive at midday, requiring a siesta-style schedule. Sunscreen and hydration are non-negotiable for anyone exploring the sun-baked Roman stones.

7-Day France & Spain Loop Tour: Paris, Avignon, Loire Valley, and Bordeaux | Free Barcelona City Walk

Wonderful experience from start to finish. The staff answered my questions quickly before booking, which gave me confidence. The tour itself was beautiful, especially the wine area near Bordeaux. I also loved the energy of Barcelona after the quieter French towns. The driver was safe and the guide created a very friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended.
