Rocky Mountaineer
When it comes to US luxury train travel, the Rocky Mountaineer always takes center stage. For decades, this company exclusively operated in Canada. A few years ago, they finally brought their world-renowned, high-end service south of the border. The "Rockies to the Red Rocks" route is nothing short of spectacular. If you want top-tier service, phenomenal food, and massive windows, this is your ride.
Itinerary
This two-day rail journey connects Denver, Colorado, with Moab, Utah, and the route is available in both directions. If you depart from Denver, the train immediately begins a steep climb into the Rocky Mountains. You will pass through the famous Moffat Tunnel, which cuts directly through the Continental Divide. From there, the tracks follow the rushing waters of the Colorado River. At the end of the first day, the train stops in the historic hot springs town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. You get off the train and sleep in a comfortable local hotel.
The next morning, you board the train again and cross into Utah. The landscape shifts dramatically. Lush mountain greenery gives way to towering red sandstone cliffs. You travel through Ruby Canyon, an area completely inaccessible by car. Finally, you arrive in Moab, the gateway to Arches National Park.

2026 Schedule & Cost
The Rocky Mountaineer does not run year-round on this route. In 2026, the service runs from April through November, with departures every week. The spring journeys offer views of snow-capped peaks, while the autumn trips provide brilliant displays of changing fall foliage.
In 2026, the price for a Signature ticket is $1,809 per person, while an upgrade to Premier costs $2,439. The price includes one night’s accommodation and meals; upgrading grants access to a newly renovated lounge car featuring a signature cocktail bar and more spacious seating. What to Prepare for a Train Trip?
Long-distance train travel requires different preparation strategies than flying. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
First, think about your luggage. If you travel on Amtrak, you can check your large, heavy bags just like you would on an airplane. Only bring a small carry-on bag or a weekender duffel into your sleeper cabin. A massive suitcase will simply not fit in the tight corridors or your private room.
Second, dress comfortably. You will spend a lot of time sitting, reading, and walking between railcars. Loose, breathable clothing is best; bring cozy socks or slippers for lounging in your cabin. Also, pack a light sweater or fleece jacket; the air conditioning on trains can sometimes run cold.
Third, bring your power essentials, such as a portable charger. Whether you’re watching movies or taking photos, having plenty of power is essential.
Finally, carry some cash. While meals are often included in your premium ticket, it is highly encouraged to tip your sleeping car attendant and the dining car servers. A handful of five and ten-dollar bills will make the tipping process easy and stress-free.
FAQ
What is the most luxurious train ride in the US?
Most people would say the Rocky Mountaineer, the train, offers incredible accommodations and excellent onboard service, making for a highly refined experience.
What is the Amtrak 750 mile rule?
This is a specific federal regulation that dictates how Amtrak routes are funded. Established by the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008, the rule states that any train route spanning 750 miles or longer is considered a "long-distance" route. These longer routes receive direct financial funding from the federal government. Conversely, any route shorter than 750 miles is considered "state-supported." This means the states the train travels through must chip in their own money to keep the service running. This rule drastically impacts where and how frequently short-distance trains operate.
What is the best scenic train ride by USA today?
Historically, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado has taken home the top prize. This historic steam train chugs along the Animas River, offering mind-blowing views of the rugged San Juan Mountains. Another frequent winner is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which weaves back and forth across the Colorado and New Mexico border. Both are spectacular choices if pure mountain scenery is your main goal.
