* Kasuga Taisha Shrine – Sacred Deer & Thousands of Lanterns
Located within Nara Park and founded in 768 AD, Kasuga Taisha is one of Nara's most iconic shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is the head of over 3,000 Kasuga Shrines across Japan and has a long historical connection with the Fujiwara family. The approach is lined with hundreds of stone lanterns and vibrant red corridors, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Over 1,000 wild deer, regarded as divine messengers, roam freely around the shrine, adding a unique cultural charm.
Inside the Treasure Hall, about 3,000 national treasures and important cultural properties, including exquisite crafts and paintings, are preserved. The shrine is also famous for its lanterns, with 2,000 stone lanterns and 1,000 hanging lanterns, offered over centuries by nobles, samurai, and commoners for blessings. During the Setsubun (February) and Chugen (August) festivals, all lanterns are lit, creating a magical scene along the corridors.
Notice: Visiting the main shrine area (Honsha / Omiya) is free. Worship at the main hall requires ¥700 (optional, not included).
* Walking from Kasuga Taisha to Nara Park (Optional Free Exploration)
Explore Nara Park, a historic urban park at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, home to iconic landmarks including Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Stroll leisurely through the park to enjoy its serene atmosphere and the largest concentration of friendly deer in Nara, a must-see attraction. Visitors can feed the deer, but be cautious as they may approach in groups.
* Todaiji Temple – Home of the Great Buddha (Entrance Fee at own expense)
Founded during the Nara Period (710–794), Todaiji Temple is one of Nara's most iconic temples, housing the massive Daibutsu (Great Buddha, Vairocana Buddha). Completed in 752 AD under Emperor Shomu's order, the temple complex took nearly 40 years to develop into its grand scale. Despite fires in 1180 and 1567, the main hall and other structures were rebuilt during the Kamakura and Edo periods, preserving Todaiji's historic legacy.
13:30pm: Mount Yoshino Cherry Blossoms – Stroll Among Japan's Famous Thousand Sakura
A UNESCO World Heritage site and centerpiece of Nara's vast national park, Mt. Yoshino is home to 30,000 wild cherry trees. Each spring, a magnificent "moving wave" of pink unfolds as the blossoms climb the mountain in four stages: Shimo (Lower), Naka (Middle), Kami (Upper), and Oku (Innermost).
Known as "Ichimoku Senbon" (a thousand trees at a glance), this breathtaking spectacle draws visitors worldwide. Beyond the views, the mountain's spiritual heritage comes alive with spring rituals, notably the Flower Offering Ceremony at Kinpusen-ji Temple and the Rice Planting Festival at Yoshino Mikumari Shrine, offering a profound journey into Japan's ancient soul.
