▼ Owakudani – Experience the Volcanic Wonders (about 40 minutes, free time)
Owakudani, located in the southeastern part of Mt. Fuji in Hakone City, is a famous tourist attraction. This scenic spot was formed about 4,000 years ago during the final volcanic activity of the Hakone volcano, creating a volcanic crater on the northern slope of Mount Kami. Most of the spring waters in Owakudani are toxic, which is why it was historically called the "Great Hell." It was renamed Owakudani after Emperor Meiji visited in 1876.
【Optional: Try the Famous Black Eggs of Owakudani】
About a 15-minute walk from the entrance of the Nature Research Trail, you'll find the small shop "Tamago Chaya," where the local specialty black eggs are cooked on site. Legend says eating one egg adds seven years to your life. The white eggs are boiled in a hot spring at around 80°C for 1 hour and then steamed at 100°C for 15 minutes. The eggs turn black due to a reaction between the iron in the hot spring water and hydrogen sulfide on the eggshell surface.
