Getting Around Washington DC
The core sights are close together, so you will walk a lot. The Metro fills the gaps, and it serves both Reagan National and Union Station. Check the current fares, hours, and payment options on the official Metro website before you travel, because I couldn't verify them for this guide.
The National Mall is open 24 hours a day and runs from the foot of the Capitol to the Potomac River. The memorials are quieter in the early evening and morning. Museum and tour hours are much shorter, so save the Mall for dusk and the museums for daytime.
Museums and Free Attractions
Smithsonian Museums
All Smithsonian museums are free. The National Museum of African American History and Culture requires free timed passes reserved online. Opening days vary, and I'd check them before you book. As listed in October 2026, the National Museum of American History is open Friday through Tuesday, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture is open Wednesday through Sunday, both from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All Smithsonian museums are closed on December 25.
National Archives
Entry is free. Timed-entry tickets cost $1 and are optional but recommended, because waits can exceed an hour without one during holidays and peak months. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A new permanent exhibit, The American Story, is part of the visit.
