See what some believe to be the lost island of Atlantis. Santorini, aka Thira, suffered one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history 4,500 years ago and today its iconic white-washed villages are dramatically perched high atop soaring multi-colored cliffs that rise from an Aegean-flooded caldera. Atlantis or not, Santorini is one of the most dreamed about destinations in the world and arguably the most beautiful of all the islands in the Cyclades. Not to be missed is the excavation site of Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city virtually intact that was preserved under layers of volcanic rock.
