September to October: Early aurora season with milder weather and the advantage of unfrozen lakes creating beautiful reflections. Autumn foliage provides colorful foregrounds for photography.

November to February: Peak aurora season with the longest, darkest nights. This is the coldest period, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing, especially in inland locations. Clear, cold nights offer the best aurora visibility.

What to Wear for a Northern Lights Tour

Northern lights viewing requires standing still outdoors in cold, often windy conditions for extended periods. Proper winter gear is essential:

Base Layers: Thermal underwear made of merino wool or synthetic materials. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture and loses insulating properties.

Mid Layers: Fleece or down jackets for insulation. Multiple thin layers trap heat better than one thick layer.
