Travel to Hainan Island to Explore a Different Side of China

cover

Most first trips to China follow a familiar path: Beijing's palaces, Xi'an's warriors, Shanghai's skyline. Hainan sits far from that route. It is a tropical island in the South China Sea with palm-lined beaches, coral reefs, rainforest hills, and a warm climate through the winter, and it feels more like Southeast Asia than the China most visitors expect.

This Hainan Island travel guide covers the practical questions in one place: where the island is, how to travel to Hainan Island, when to go, which areas suit which trips, and what a five-day schedule looks like. Travel to Hainan Island, China, can be a beach add-on to a longer trip or a trip of its own, and Hainan China travel works well either way.

Where Is Hainan Island?

Hainan is China's southernmost province. It includes Hainan Island and more than 200 smaller islands in the South China Sea. The main island covers about 32,900 square kilometers, and the province had about 10.08 million residents at the 2020 census.

The Qiongzhou Strait, roughly 20 kilometers wide, separates the island from the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong. Haikou, the capital, sits on the north coast, close to that crossing. Sanya, the main beach resort area, lies on the south coast.

Hainan is also a free trade port. The island-wide special customs operations that support that status appear to have started on December 18, 2025. For visitors, the most noticeable effect is in duty-free shopping, which I cover below.

How to Travel to Hainan Island

Most visitors fly. If you're already in southern China, rail and ferry routes are a useful alternative.

By Air

Hainan has two main airports for visitors:

Airport City Notes
Haikou Meilan International Airport Haikou, north The island's largest and busiest airport
Sanya Phoenix International Airport Sanya, south The second-largest airport, about 11 km northwest of Sanya according to one government source

If your trip is about beaches, fly into Sanya. If you want to start with Haikou's historic and volcanic sights, or you see a better fare, fly into Haikou and continue south. A third airport, Qionghai Boao, serves the east coast.

By Rail and Ferry from the Mainland

Trains do not cross the Qiongzhou Strait on a bridge. Instead, a rail ferry has linked the mainland to the island since 2004, and passenger ferries run between Zhanjiang in Guangdong and Haikou's South Port, a few hundred meters northwest of Haikou Railway Station. This route suits travelers who are already in Guangdong and want to arrive by land and sea.

Getting Around the Island

Railways encircle the island, so trains connect Haikou and Sanya along the coast, and a ring expressway runs 612.8 kilometers around Hainan. Buses from Haikou's stations reach most areas. Many visitors use ride-hailing or a private driver for beach and park days, because attractions can sit well away from the stations.

Entry Requirements

Entry rules depend on your passport, so check them with the official authorities before you book. As an example, China's National Immigration Administration announced on August 20, 2026 that Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added to Hainan's 30-day visa-free entry policy, bringing the total to 61 countries. Under that policy, travelers with ordinary passports who enter through Hainan's open ports can stay in Hainan for up to 30 days for tourism, business, or visits. Work, study, and news reporting still require the proper visa. The policy applies only to Hainan, not to the rest of China.

I can't list every eligible country or port here, so confirm your nationality and entry port with the National Immigration Administration before you travel.

Best Time to Visit Hainan

Hainan has a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. Sources agree on that pattern but differ on exact typhoon dates, so I've kept the table general.

Months What to expect
November to April Warm, dry and sunny. This is the best window for swimming, snorkeling, and diving
December to February Peak season, with the highest hotel prices. Early December or late February avoids the holiday rush
March to May Rain is light at first, but humidity rises toward May. Late April offers a good balance of price and crowds
June to September Hot, humid, and rainy, with afternoon showers and the lowest prices
July to October Typhoon season, according to most sources. Some give July to September

Sanya is the safer choice for a beach trip. It stays warm in the dry season, while Haikou can feel cool enough to rule out swimming on some days. In the rainy season, Haikou also has a higher chance of heavy rain. If you travel in summer, book flexible tickets and check the forecast before you go.

Where to Go: Sanya, Haikou and Beyond

Sanya

Sanya is the main destination for beach holidays. It has the island's best-known beaches, resorts, and day trips, and it makes the easiest base for a first visit. If you want to see more of the area, our Sanya tours page shows how its highlights fit together.

Haikou

Haikou is the capital and a transport hub. Its historic sites include the Five Officials Temple and the tomb of Hai Rui. Outside the city, the lava villages are worth a half day, with the Rong Tang lava tunnels and Mei She's five-storey gun tower.

Inland and Rainforest Areas

Away from the coast, Wuzhi Mountain is the island's highest peak at 1,840 meters. Closer to Sanya, Qi Xian Ling Forest Park, north of the city, combines a rainforest trek to Seven Fairy Mountain with mineral-rich hot springs. It's best in winter.

Who Hainan Suits

Hainan Island travel suits beach and nature trips more than city sightseeing. Families with young children and older travelers will likely prefer Sanya, which stays warm through the dry season. Snorkelers and divers should aim for November to May, when conditions are best for water sports. If you want history and local food alongside the beach, add a day or two in Haikou.

Top Things to Do in Hainan

Yalong Bay. A stretch of white sand on the south coast, with water sports on offer. It's the most popular beach area for first-time visitors.

Wuzhizhou Island. A day-trip island reached by ferry from Haitang Bay. It has white sand beaches and coral reefs for snorkeling and diving.

Nanshan Temple. A Buddhist temple west of Sanya, known for its large, three-sided Guanyin statue standing out at sea and reached by a bridge. The statue is 108 meters tall.

Qi Xian Ling Forest Park. A mountain park with a rainforest trail and hot springs. Go in winter for the best conditions.

Haikou's lava villages. Volcanic landscapes outside the capital, with lava tunnels and old stone buildings.

A 5-Day Hainan Island Itinerary

This schedule uses Sanya as a base and adds one day in Haikou on the way out.

Day Plan
1 Fly into Sanya Phoenix Airport and check in. Spend the afternoon on the beach
2 Yalong Bay for a full day of swimming and water sports
3 Day trip to Wuzhizhou Island, with snorkeling over the coral reefs
4 Nanshan Temple in the morning, then Qi Xian Ling Forest Park and the hot springs
5 Travel north to Haikou for the lava villages, then fly out from Haikou Meilan

If you have a week, add a second beach day in Sanya, or a visit to Wuzhi Mountain. If you only have three days, keep Days 1 to 3 and fly out of Sanya.

Duty-Free Shopping in Hainan

Duty-free shopping is a big part of Hainan travel for many visitors. According to China's Ministry of Finance, as reported by China Services Info, the island-wide special customs operations raised Hainan's zero-tariff product coverage from 21 percent to 74 percent. On the first day alone, offshore duty-free sales reached 161 million yuan.

Allowances and product lists change, and I couldn't verify the per-person allowance, so check the current rules at the duty-free shop or airport before you budget for shopping.

Practical Tips for Your Hainan Trip

  • Book early for winter. December to February is peak season, and hotel prices are highest.
  • Choose Sanya for swimming. It stays warmer than Haikou in the dry season.
  • Pack for sun and sudden rain. Humidity is high, and showers can arrive quickly in the rainy season.
  • Check typhoon forecasts from July to October. Typhoons can disrupt flights and ferries.
  • Carry your passport. You will need it for hotel check-in and entry formalities.
  • Confirm prices on the day. Ferry, park, and attraction fares change, and I have not listed them here.

Travel to Hainan Island, China, is simple to arrange. The island is easy to reach, warm for much of the year, and very different from the cities on most China itineraries. Go between November and April, base yourself in Sanya, confirm your entry rules before you book, and give yourself five days to cover the beaches, a reef day trip, and the rainforest.
