Day 1 Boston, Massachusetts

Boston has always been the best starting point for exploring New England. Spend your first day walking the Freedom Trail, which connects sixteen historic sites across the city with a simple red-brick line on the sidewalk. You'll pass the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere's house, and the Old North Church without needing a map.

What to expect: If you land earlier in the day, consider adding a swing through Beacon Hill before you tackle the Freedom Trail. The gas lamps, brick sidewalks, and narrow streets there give you a completely different feel from the busier downtown core, and it only takes about thirty minutes to walk through the whole neighborhood. Boston Common, right next to the State House, is also a nice spot to rest your feet for a few minutes.

Day 2 Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is worth exploring in depth; on the second day, you can delve into the local neighborhoods and visit museums.

What to expect: Beacon Hill is worth a slow morning walk, with its gas lamps, brick sidewalks, and narrow streets giving you a completely different feel from downtown. From there, the Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum both make for a good afternoon if you enjoy art and architecture. What to expect: Newport built its reputation on Gilded Age mansions, and touring one or two of them, like The Breakers or Marble House, gives you a look at how America's wealthiest families once lived. Save time for the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path that hugs the coastline with mansion views on one side and crashing waves on the other.

Day 4 Day Trip to Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic is a hidden gem on the East Coast that I highly recommend; it's about an hour's drive from Newport.

What to expect: Mystic Seaport Museum recreates a 19th-century maritime village, complete with historic ships you can actually board. Day 5 Newport to Southern Vermont

Start heading north toward Vermont. This is the longest driving day of the trip, around three and a half hours total, but it's broken up nicely by a scenic detour through Connecticut's Litchfield Hills.

What to expect: This quieter, rural stretch of Connecticut gets skipped by most travel itineraries, which is exactly why it's worth a stop. Break up the drive with a walk around Litchfield's charming green, surrounded by colonial-era homes, or swing by Kent Falls State Park for a short trail past cascading waterfalls right off the road. Give yourself an hour or two here before continuing toward Vermont. By late afternoon, cross the state line and settle into the Manchester or Stowe area.

Stowe is my favorite place in Vermont; it offers some of the most beautiful fall scenery on the East Coast.

What to expect: Spend the day at the base of Mount Mansfield, the state's tallest peak, where hiking or taking the gondola up gives you sweeping views. The town center is small and easy to wander, with a white church steeple that's been photographed more times than anyone could count. Stop by a local sugarhouse if it's the right season and pick up real Vermont maple syrup to bring home. The Stowe Recreation Path, a paved trail along a river with mountain views the whole way, is a good option if you want something flatter and easier.

Day 7 Day Trip to Waterbury and Montpelier

Waterbury sits about fifteen minutes south of Stowe, with Montpelier another twenty minutes beyond that, so the whole loop is easy.

What to expect: Start in Waterbury with a tour of the Ben & Jerry's Factory, where you can walk through the production line and sample a few flavors before they hit the shelves.
