This 1,980-mile long river begins in Altin Lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia, runs through the Canadian Yukon Territory and then into the U.S. state of Alaska to empty into the Bering Sea in Wade Hampton. The Yukon River was a major thoroughfare during the Klondike Gold Rush from 1896-1903. Its Thirty-Mile section from Lake Laberge to the Teslin River is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The river is only crossed by four vehicle bridges - The Lewes Bridge, The Robert Campbell Bridge and two called The Yukon River Bridge.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de Yukon River

What is the best time of year to raft the Yukon River?

The best time to raft the Yukon River is June to early August, when snowmelt ensures navigable water levels and temperatures range from 10-20°C. Late May may have ice hazards, and September brings freezing risks. Most commercial trips launch from Whitehorse during peak summer conditions, ideal for viewing wildlife and navigating long daylight hours.

How do I obtain permits for a self-guided expedition on the Yukon River?

Self-guided expeditions on the Yukon River require a free Non-Powered Watercraft Registration from the Yukon Government’s Department of Tourism and Culture. Register online or in Whitehorse. Carrying a satellite communicator and filing trip plans with Parks Canada is mandatory for remote stretches, especially north of Dawson City.

Which access points are most used for float trips on the Yukon River near Fairbanks?

Common float trip access points near Fairbanks include Eagle Summit (via Steese Highway) and Circle City, though most launches begin at Tanana or Ruby in Alaska. The Yukon River’s headwaters are in British Columbia, but primary Alaskan launch sites are north of Fortymile. Check U.S. Bureau of Land Management for current access conditions.

Is the Yukon River safe for kayaking solo?

Solo kayaking on the Yukon River is possible but risky. Strong currents, cold water (below 15°C), and remote stretches require advanced preparation. Always carry bear spray, GPS, emergency shelter, and file a trip plan with the Yukon Search and Rescue. Avoid sections above Whitehorse in spring due to ice and swift flows.
