One of Alaska's main ports, this picturesque city is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, many glaciers and Prince William Sound. Valdez was named after Spanish Navy Minister Antonio Valdes y Fernandez Bazan in 1790. The city's Valdez Marine Terminal is where oil is transported onto ships from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
