Founded as Santiago de Tequila - place of tribute - the city of Tequila is most well known as the birthplace of its signature agave drink, Tequila. With the abundant agave plant, the indigenous Mexican people fermented Tequila prior to the arrival of the Spanish, who would later distill it into the modern Tequila. Visitors to the town are invited to tour the town via the Tequila Route aboard the Tequila Express, which will take them to local towns and major distilleries. The town and vast agave fields are designated as a World Heritage Site.
