During the later half of the 19th century the theatre was booming in Rio de Janeiro and efforts were made to build a new, modern theatre for local companies, resulting in the Teatro Municipal. Inaugurated in Cinelandia in 1909, the Teatro features an eclectic style inspired by the Palais Garnier of Paris, and the interior features a luxurious collection of sculptures and paintings beneath the richly decorated ceiling. It is currently home to the Petrobras and the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestras, featuring ballet and classical performances.
