This season brings frequent showers and high humidity as the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone drifts northward. Temperatures remain warm, often hovering around 28-30 °C by day in the lowlands. The rain transforms the landscape: the Serengeti becomes lush and green, birdlife swells, and the calving grounds in the southern plains teem with newborn wildebeest. Though some roads may turn muddy and certain lodges close, visitor numbers dip and prices fall, offering a peaceful, budget-friendly experience. Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro can be more challenging as trails become slippery, but bird-watchers and photographers will revel in the verdant beauty and dramatic skies.

In June through August, Tanzania settles into its dry season, ushering in cool mornings and sunny, cloudless days. Daytime temperatures in the northern parks typically range from 20 to 30 °C, while highland areas like Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro get quite chilly at altitude. With vegetation thinned and wildlife concentrated around dwindling water sources, game drives through Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro deliver classic safari sightings. This is also prime time for witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration, particularly river crossings later in the season. On the coast and in Zanzibar, days are bright and breezy - ideal for beach time, diving, or relaxing by the Indian Ocean as the Kuzi wind calms the waters.

From September into November, the dry season continues before giving way to the short rains. During September and October, skies stay mostly clear and temperatures hover around 28-30 °C, making for superb game viewing conditions. The herds remain relatively close to water, but with fewer tourists, there’s more space to soak in the vast plains of the Serengeti and the escarpments of the Ngorongoro Crater. By November, light, erratic showers may start to fall as the “vuli” or short rains begin. This shoulder season brings a fresh vitality to the bush: foliage gains lushness, migrant birds return, and the landscape softens without compromising wildlife visibility. Safari lodges may offer better rates, while nature takes on a gentler, greener rhythm.

December through February ushers in warm, relatively dry weather across many regions, with some variability. The northern parks see a brief rainy period - what’s known as the “short rains” - but the showers are often light and unpredictable. In the southern Serengeti, this is calving season: thousands of wildebeest give birth on the Ndutu plains, drawing predators and creating dramatic wildlife moments. Coastal areas including Zanzibar remain hot and humid, but sea conditions tend to be calm, especially under the northeast Kaskazi wind. With fewer crowds than the peak dry season, this time offers both remarkable wildlife encounters and a relaxed atmosphere - perfect for combining a safari with beach escapes or climbing Kilimanjaro on clearer, cooler mornings.

Absolutely loved this trip! The itinerary was well‑paced — enough time in Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara to enjoy the animals without rushing. One of the best parts was the community visit in Mto wa Mbu and learning about local projects — it made the whole trip feel more meaningful. Accommodation varied but was clean and comfortable, and the team took care of all the little details so we could just enjoy the safari. Truly one of my best travel experiences!
