One of Scotland's most historically significant places is this city where in 1297 at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, William Wallace overpowered the English army thus paving the way for Robert the Bruce to finally overthrow the British in 1314 at nearby Bannockburn. Stirling sits atop a wooded crag and has an amazingly preserved Old Town of winding cobblestone streets that is crowned by the imposing Stirling Castle. Stirling is also home to the towering Wallace Monument, which honors the legendary hero of Braveheart fame.
