This ornate Midtown Manhattan cathedral replaced St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in 1879 as the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Construction on the Neo-Gothic style St. Patrick's Cathedral designed by James Renwick Jr. was completed in 1878 and the spires, another chapel, organs and stained glass windows were added in later years. Pope Benedict XVI held Mass in the U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2008 and referred to the spires as "a symbol of the spiritual yearning of the human heart."
