Its Looff Hippodrome houses the antique carousel constructed in 1922 that is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Santa Monica Pier is actually two connected piers - one built in 1909 and the other in 1916 - and was the site of the La Monica Ballroom that opened in 1924 as one of the largest dance halls in the United States.
