The historic pier features the free-admission Pacific Park containing more than a dozen rides including its large solar-powered Ferris wheel and steel roller coaster both offering amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. Santa Monica Pier also has an aquarium, stores, restaurants, entertainers, a trapeze school and an arcade. Its Looff Hippodrome houses the antique carousel constructed in 1922 that is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Santa Monica Pier is actually two connected piers - one built in 1909 and the other in 1916 - and was the site of the La Monica Ballroom that opened in 1924 as one of the largest dance halls in the United States.
