Neuschwanstein, arguably the most iconic landmark in Germany, was planned by King Ludwig II and purposefully built in the 1860s as a romantic medieval castle to re-create the world of Germanic mythology. The castle’s showpiece is the opulent Minstrels’ Hall, an ode to German composer Wagner where wall frescos depict scenes from his opera Tannhäuser.
