The National War Memorial of Canada, located in Ontario Canada, is a large cenotaph located in the Confederation Square in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The memorial was originally built to commemorate Canada's role in the First World War, but later was rededicated in 1982 to include their role in the Second World War and the Korean War. The memorial is made of granite and has bronze sculptures of 23 figures, representing the 11 branches of the Canadian forces engaged in the First World War. The Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tomb holding the body of an unidentified solider selected from a cemetery on the site of a famous battle of the First World War, was later added to the site in 2000. The memorial was designed by Vernon March, the winner of a a design competition for the memorial, in 1925. Construction for the memorial began in 1926; the memorial was completed in 1938 and was officially unveiled in 1939 by George VI, King of Canada, just months before the Second World War began.
