Inaugurated in 1938, the Museum of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro is home to the Portugeese Royal Collection, personally brought over by King John VI when the royal court took up residence in Brazil temporarily during Napoleon's invasion. In total the museum houses over 20,000 pieces of art, featuring Brazilian and International paintings, sculptures, and prints. The structure of the building pays homage to a variety of designs, including the Louvre, the Italian and French Renaissance, and Neoclassical.
