This active 8,363-foot stratovolcano located in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state last erupted in 1980 causing a major catastrophe and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mount St. Helens was named after Alleyne FitzHerbert, 1st Baron St. Helens - a good friend of explorer George Vancouver, who first recorded seeing the volcano in 1792 aboard the HMS Discovery.
