One of the lesser-known cities in Southern France, Montpellier is a multicultural metropolis that touts over 1,000 years of history. Founded in the 10th century, Montpellier was never a Roman city like many of its neighbors but a trading port and place of learning. In fact it’s home to Europe’s first medical school. Today over one-third of the population is students, keeping the city young at heart despite its long history. Relax at a cafe in the Place de la Comedie and enjoy views of the opera house or visit the city’s many private mansions and vineyards while staying close to the sea.
