Spring in Lucerne is a great time to visit; the weather can be a bit of a rollercoaster, starting chilly at around 5°C (41°F) in March, but quickly warming up to a very comfortable 18°C (64°F) by May. You'll see the snow line rapidly retreating up the mountains, which means all that meltwater makes the Reuss River really start moving, and Lake Lucerne fills right up. While the city itself is looking its prettiest, with tulips and daffodils popping up everywhere near the Chapel Bridge, you have to remember that the big mountains like Pilatus are still pretty much closed for serious hiking until late May because of all the lingering snow. If you're into photography, this is a fantastic time because you get those sharp, green valley views with brilliant white snow caps right above them.

Summer is without a doubt the busiest and warmest time in Lucerne, when the entire city and lake region are buzzing with tourists. The weather is generally superb and reliable, with daytime temperatures usually sitting between a pleasant 20°C and 26°C (68°F to 79°F), although you should be ready for a few really hot days where it can push past 30°C (86°F), making the lake a very popular place to cool off. Everything is open during the summer; the scenic boat tours on Lake Lucerne are running constantly, and all the famous mountain transport options, the world's steepest cogwheel railway up Pilatus, the cable cars to Rigi, are fully accessible for hiking and exploring the high alpine flowers.

Autumn is often the secret best time to visit Lucerne, bringing beautiful weather and a much calmer atmosphere after the summer rush. Temperatures are still very comfortable in September, around 18°C (64°F), before gradually cooling down to a brisk 7°C (45°F) by November. Making for fantastic photos and comfortable walking, especially along the city walls. What really makes this time special is the foliage: the trees around the lake and on the lower slopes turn incredible shades of red and gold. A weird but cool weather phenomenon you often get is the Nebel, or inversion fog. This means the valley and the city can be socked in under a layer of dense, cold mist, while if you take a cable car up Mount Rigi, you'll pop out above the clouds into brilliant, warm sunshine.

Winter settles over Lucerne with a crisp chill and a focus on cozy, indoor activities, though the high mountains become a haven for snow lovers. In the city basin, temperatures are typically cold but manageable, hovering between -3°C and 4°C (27°F to 39°F). While the city itself doesn't always have deep snow cover, often just frost or an occasional dusting, the mountain resorts nearby are in their prime, offering excellent conditions for skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing throughout the season. The short days are made cheerful by the festive spirit, with attractive Christmas Markets in December that draw visitors looking for warm drinks and handcrafted goods near the historic center.
