13-Day Tibet Spiritual Tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu: Shigatse, Saga, Tarchen and Gyirong | Everest Base Camp, Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash Kora

I loved the mix of hotels and local guesthouses. The farm lunch by Yamdrok Lake was such a unique experience—I still remember the hospitality of the local family.

Interesting

Went there during the peak season for one week, visited Lhasa and Namtso lake. First 24h had problems to adapt, after that was OK. Tibet is fascinating and rich in culture, really worth visiting. Organisation was OK, the guide she was very nice, knowledgable and helpful.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de Lake Manasarovar

Which airport is closest to Lake Manasarovar and how do I reach the lake from there?

The nearest airport is Ngari Gunsa Airport (NGQ), located about 240 kilometers west of the lake. From the airport, you must hire a private 4x4 vehicle or join an organized tour to drive to Darchen, the gateway town. The road journey takes approximately five to six hours on high-altitude terrain. Public transport is extremely limited and unreliable for this specific route.

What is the best time of year to visit Lake Manasarovar to avoid extreme weather?

Visit between May and early October for the most accessible conditions. July and August offer the warmest temperatures but coincide with the monsoon, bringing occasional rain and cloud cover that may obscure Mount Kailash. Late September provides clear skies and stable weather before winter snows close high mountain passes. Temperatures drop below freezing at night even in summer, so pack accordingly.

Do I need a special permit to visit Lake Manasarovar and where can I get it?

Yes, foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit and an Alien Travel Permit specifically for Ngari Prefecture. These documents are only obtainable through registered travel agencies in Lhasa or Kathmandu as part of a guided tour package. Individual independent travel is strictly prohibited in this region. Ensure your agency processes these permits at least twenty days before your planned arrival date.

Is it safe to drink water directly from Lake Manasarovar given its sacred status?

While locally revered as pure and spiritually cleansing, drinking untreated water from Lake Manasarovar poses significant health risks due to potential bacterial contamination and high altitude effects on digestion. Boil all water thoroughly or use certified filtration tablets before consumption. Carry sufficient bottled water from Darchen for your immediate needs during circumambulation or short stays near the shore.
