Hawaii's first planned resort community situated in West Maui is home to the famously stunning three-mile long white sand Kaanapali Beach. Development of Kaanapali started in the 1960s and it now contains numerous resorts and condominiums. It has a cliff diving, or Lele Kawa ceremony every evening at sunset off of Black Rock to pay homage to Maui King Kahekili who performed this ritual to display his spiritual strength.
