If it's not in the itinerary already, those touring the Trujillo area should make a detour to see this enchanting seaside village and popular surfing spot. Take a ride on the curious-looking reed boats - Caballitos de Totora - used by Peruvian fishermen for more than 3,000 years – take to the waves on a surfboard, or sample the local ceviche. Not far from Huanchaco are the Chimu ruins of Chan Chan dating back to 1300 AD - once the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas and the largest adobe city in the world.
