Hobbiton is a permanent movie set located on a private farm near Matamata on the North Island of New Zealand. Originally created for the filming of the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, it has become one of the country’s most recognizable travel destinations. The site is defined by its rolling green hills and meticulously maintained gardens that recreate the fictional Shire. Visitors can explore the twelve acre site on guided tours, which wind past forty four unique Hobbit Holes built into the hillsides. These structures are famous for their intricate details, including colorful round doors, miniature fences, and weathered stone paths. The tour typically concludes at the Green Dragon Inn, a fully functional pub where travelers can sample traditional beverages in a themed setting.
