The Gloria Funicular is not only a national monument but part of Lisbon’s public transportation system, similar to what cable cars are to San Francisco. The 265-meter journey connects Restauradores Square in downtown Lisbon with the Sao Pedro de Alcantara Garden. Although consisting of just two stops, one at the bottom and the other at the top of the hill, the journey itself is rich with cultural heritage and commanding views of St. George’s Castle and Bairro Alto. The funicular is so popular that it transports more than three million passengers annually.
