Naxos has undergone several transformations since its founding in 734 BC as Sicily's first Greek colony, the most recent being the sudden transition from sleepy fishing village to popular seaside resort. Just up the hill in Taormina are the ruins of a Greco-Roman Amphitheatre and an archeological park.
