Best Time to Travel to Colorado

Colorado offers unique travel experiences throughout the year, but September and October are generally considered the ideal time to visit. During this period, the aspen trees transform into dazzling gold, creating one of the nation's most beautiful scenic drives. From November through March, it's the perfect time for skiing, with world-renowned ski resorts available.

Best Cities and Attractions in Colorado

Most trips to Colorado are centered around several major cities. Here are some of the best places to travel in Colorado.

Denver

Denver is the capital and major transportation hub of Colorado, with an exceptionally walkable downtown area. You can visit Union Station, a historic transportation hub that's now a destination for dining and shopping. If you enjoy music, head to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, a geological wonder and world-class music venue. Don't forget to shop at the 16th Street Mall.

Colorado Springs

Just an hour's drive from Denver, nestled at the foot of Pikes Peak, this area boasts abundant natural beauty. Particularly noteworthy is Garden of the Gods, featuring towering red sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of majestic snow-capped mountains. The U.S. Air Force Academy is also located here, where visitors can tour the renowned Cadet Chapel.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Accessible from the town of Estes Park, this national park is the crown jewel of the state. It offers dramatic alpine scenery, wildlife viewing, and the spectacular Trail Ridge Road, which takes you above the treeline.

Transportation in Colorado

Driving: This is the most common way to explore Colorado, but navigating mountain roads can be challenging for those unfamiliar with the terrain.
Tour Organization: An excellent and worry-free option. Professional drivers handle navigation, allowing you to focus on the scenery rather than the road. This is especially important when visiting multiple destinations like the Rocky Mountain National Park and the Royal Gorge Bridge in a single trip.
Public Transit: Denver has a reliable light rail system connecting the airport to downtown, but reaching mountain towns requires a car or shuttle service.

Colorado Trip Itineraries

If you're looking for some Colorado trip ideas, here are some itineraries you can consider.

5-Day Colorado Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Denver and head to Union Station for lunch. Afterward, visit Larimer Square, the city's oldest neighborhood.

Day 2: Depart Denver for Estes Park, then enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Drive along the spectacular Trail Ridge Road, taking in breathtaking views. If time permits, visit the historic Stanley Hotel.

Day 3: Visit Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, stroll among the massive sandstone rock formations. Then head to Colorado Springs and take a walk through the Garden of the Gods.

Day 4: Climb Pikes Peak via the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Afterward, explore Manitou Springs at the base of the mountain and sample its natural carbonated water.

Day 5: If time permits, visit the Denver Botanic Gardens or the Denver Art Museum to explore the art collections.

Nearby Sightseeing

Colorado’s central location makes it a perfect jumping-off point for a broader American West adventure. Many Colorado tours extend their reach to include iconic landmarks in neighboring states.

Yellowstone & Grand Teton (Wyoming): Often combined with Colorado trips, these parks offer geothermal wonders and dramatic mountain peaks to the north.

Mount Rushmore (South Dakota): A popular add-on for history buffs, located northeast of Denver.

Canyonlands National Park (Utah): Just across the western border, these parks offer a stark, red-rock contrast to the alpine greenery of the Rockies.

Invierno 2026/2027
Winter runs from late November through March and is defined by brilliant sunshine and dry powder snow. Unlike damp coastal climates, the high altitude creates a crisp cold that feels invigorating rather than biting. Temperatures vary significantly by elevation, with mountain highs averaging 25°F to 35°F (-4°C to 2°C) while Denver often sees milder days reaching 45°F (7°C). This season splits the state into two distinct worlds. The Rockies attract global travelers to resorts like Vail for premier skiing and snowboarding, while the Front Range cities offer sunny days perfect for exploring urban museums or the historic National Western Stock Show. Drivers must prepare for snowy passes, but the reward is soaking in geothermal hot springs surrounded by a silent white landscape.

Primavera 2026
Spring is from April to May, acts as a dynamic transition period where visitors experience both lingering snow and vibrant blooms. Temperatures fluctuate significantly, climbing from 50°F to 70°F (10°C to 21°C) in the lower valleys, though the mountains remain cooler with highs around 40°F to 55°F (4°C to 13°C). While high country trails navigate the melting snow known locally as mud season, the plains turn green and offer excellent hiking conditions. This is a rare time you can ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Late spring kicks off the whitewater rafting season as rivers swell with snowmelt. Travelers can find exceptional value on luxury lodging in mountain towns before the summer rush, provided they pack layers for the unpredictable weather that brings both rain and sunshine.

Verano 2026
Summer lasts from June to early September and serves as the peak season for outdoor adventure. Daily temperatures are comfortable and dry, averaging 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C) in the cities and a refreshing 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) in the mountains. The snow recedes from the highest peaks to reveal miles of trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Mornings are typically clear before brief afternoon showers nourish displays of alpine wildflowers. This weather pattern keeps landscapes lush without the sweltering humidity found elsewhere. It is the perfect time for camping, climbing high peaks, and attending outdoor music festivals in towns like Telluride. Visitors also head to western orchards to taste fresh Palisade peaches, making early reservations for parks and campsites essential.

Otoño 2026
Autumn is visually spectacular from mid-September through November. The state is famous for its aspen trees, which turn a shimmering gold that contrasts against the deep blue sky. Temperatures cool down comfortably, ranging from 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) in September before dropping to 45°F to 55°F (7°C to 13°C) by November. This transformation starts in the north and moves south to create a wave of color along scenic drives like the Million Dollar Highway. The crisp air offers excellent conditions for hiking without summer heat. In Estes Park, nature lovers gather to hear the bugling of bull elk during mating season. As October progresses, crowds thin out to provide a peaceful atmosphere for exploring historic mining towns and enjoying local harvest festivals before winter returns.

Recommend!

We just returned from 2 weeks in Denver city - myself and my husband. We traveled with Tours4fun in 2014 - so we were excited to see them doing such great tours in Denver now, too. The pace of itinerary was a little fast. But I think it was not a big problem, cause I have been to the places that I wanted to go. By the way, our guide was also nice, very patient and friendly.
