This imposing brownstone cathedral, the largest in Philadelphia, has a history as fascinating as its façade. Modeled after the Lombard Church of Saint Charles in Rome, Italy, this seat of the city's archdiocese features no windows at street-level to deter vandals during the anti-Catholic riots which consumed the city during its construction. The interior of its iconic blue dome was painted by the same artist as Washington D.C.'s capitol building.
