Located just 13 kilometers northeast of Varanasi, Sarnath is a serene pilgrimage site of profound historical and spiritual significance for Buddhists worldwide. It was here, beneath the shade of ancient bodhi trees, that Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Today, visitors walk among the ruins of monasteries, stupas, and temples, including the well-preserved Dhamek Stupa and the Ashoka Pillar - whose lion capital now serves as India's national emblem. The on-site Sarnath Museum houses some of the finest examples of Buddhist art, including a delicate depiction of the Buddha in the teaching posture.
