Often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills," the South Dakota city is a popular lodging location for visitors to the nearby Mt. Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. Rapid City was founded in 1876 by miners and originally called Hay Camp. Notable city attractions include Dinosaur Park, Bear Country, USA, Storybook Island, Reptile Gardens, The Journey Museum and Gardens and Hart Ranch.
