Constructed on the site of the former Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, this Memphis museum details the history of the United States Civil Rights Movement. The National Civil Rights Museum opened in 1991 and re-opened in 2014 after a $27.5 million renovation. The complex includes the Lorraine Motel Buildings as well as the Young & Morrow and Boarding House buildings across Mulberry Street. It has 260 artifacts, 40-plus films, oral histories, interactive media and external listening posts covering five centuries of history.
