The Seattle lake offers spectacular views of the city and is surrounded by numerous parks including Gas Works, North Passage Point, South Passage Point, Fairview, Terry Pettus and South Lake Union. Lake Union visitors could observe seaplanes taking off, rowing competitions and many houseboats. The lake has some salinity and was created approximately 12,000 years ago by a glacier. Actor Tom Hanks' character in the 1993 hit romantic movie "Sleepless in Seattle" lived on a houseboat in Lake Union.
