The largest island of the Galapagos archipelago is this 1,790-square mile destination named after Spain's Queen Isabela. The island shaped like a seahorse was first named Albemarle Island after the Duke of Albemarle by one of the Galapagos' first visitors Ambrose Cowley in 1684. Isabela Island was settled by Antonio Gil in 1893. It is one of the best spots in the Galapagos for whale watching as 16 different species have been identified around the area. Notable island sites are Flamingos Lagoon, Puerto Villamil, Sierra Negra Volcano, Tagus Cove and The Wall of Tears.
